Buck Forage oats (Avena sativa Var. Buck Forage)
Buck Forage Oats is a cool season cereal grain. Cereal grains include crops such as wheat, barley and rye as wells as oats. Buck Forage Oats is a variety of oats developed specifically as a winter hardy highly attractive forage for deer.
Buck Forage Oats is an early producer and is an excellent choice for fall hunting plots. It is highly palatable and nutritious. It is consistently the most preferred forage in food plot trials. Buck Forage Oats is extremely winter hardy and will withstand freezing temperatures that severely damage or kill other oat varieties. It is widely adapted across the Southern US. It has good drought tolerance. It grows best on well-drained clay and sandy loam soils. It tolerates poorly drained soils better than rye. It tolerates a wide range of soil pH, 5.5-7.5, but does best at soil pH 5.8-6.5.
Plant September–October. Disc plot to produce a soft seed bed. Broadcast 100-120 lbs. per acre. Set disc blades 4 inches deep and disc seed in. Cover seed to a depth of 2 inches. Fertilize with 300 lbs. per acre of 13-13-13 at establishment in the absence of a soil test.
