USFWS Reports Increased Duck Numbers

US Fish and Wildlife Service's Trends in Duck Breeding Populations reports an increase in the abundance of ducks along with improved habitat conditions. The report is based on a survey of ducks across more than two million square miles in the United States and Canada. Preliminary estimates put the total duck population at about 49 million birds up about 8% from last year.   More than 7 million ponds across the United States and Canada were reported, which is about a 40% increase over the long-term average.   

Early Duck Season Outlook

Teal abundance is about 12 million, which is 11% above last year estimate, and 73% above the long-term average.

“Big Duck” Numbers

Mallard abundance is 10.9 million, similar to last year’s estimate and 42% above the long-term average.

Gadwall abundance is 3.9 million, which is 14% above last year and 102% above the long-term average. 

Pintail abundance is 3.2 million was similar to last year’s estimate and is 20% below the long-term average.
